The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has decided to demand Verified Gross Mass (VGM) for containers before they can be loaded on board a vessel. This is a part of SOLAS regulation (Safety of Life at Sea)
The new procedure and rules will come into force as from 01.07.2016.
Be aware that the procedures can be different for different harbors, shipping companies and terminals.
The VGM must be notified before loading and is the responsibility of the shipper. The risk is that containers will be left if information is not available and fines can be provided. Deadline of the information will differ from harbor to harbor and from shipper to shipper.
There are to methods to get the VGM. 1) Weigh the loaded container or 2) calculate the weight of the load + the tara of the container + weight of packaging etc.
However, containers on chassis frames, trail-ers, mafi trailers and the like on ro-ro voyages of less than 600 nautical miles are exempted
Be aware of this for your shipments before 01.07.2016 and check properly for your shipments.
